Froan nature reserve and conservation area was created in 1979. The purpose was to protect a rich and interesting flora and fauna and conserve living and nesting areas for birds, seals and other mammals in a varied and distinctive coastal landscape.

The protected area is the largest coastal nature reserve in Norway (excluding Svalbard) and is also one of the largest in Scandinavia. The nature reserve is 405 km2, of which 6.7 km2 land area. Approximately 80 km2 south and east of the nature reserve is a protected landscape area, of which 16.6 km2 land area. In addition, wildlife protection.

In 2003 Froan got status as a Ramsar area.
