Knut Hamsun was born August 4th 1859, and baptized in the old stave church at Systun Garmo August 28th the same year. The church is today in the open air museum Maihaugen.
The house was sold to Hesthagen where they used it as a smithy until shortly before 1940. The house was moved back to Garmostrædet and restored in time for the 100 aniversary for his birth in 1959. It is furnished like a small house from the middle of the 19th century.
Some objects that originaly belonged to his family are also to be seen in the house.
