The town of Svaneke was awarded with the title of Denmark's most beautiful town in 2013, competing with 14 other towns in Denmark. Bygningskultur Danmark focused in their rating on the qualities of the historical city centres.

Svaneke preserves the townscape very well – and was already in 1975 awarded the European Gold medal for perpetuation of the town. Today, Svaneke has a population of 1, 044 (2017).
