On the lake
Southern Sweden, SwedenThere is something about Swedes and being out on the waters, whether to exercise, get some fresh air or do some fishing. With roughly 9 per cent of Sweden made up of rivers and lakes, and an extensive coastline, it is never far to a water source. In Sweden there are roughly 96,000 lakes larger than 10,000 square meters. There is also a long coastline from the north-east to the south-west, as well as rivers and river lets throughout the landscape and lakes and other waters are included in the Right of Public access.
The Right of Public Access is a unique institution. It gives us all the freedom to roam the countryside. But we must also take care of nature and wildlife, and we must show consideration for landowners and for other people enjoying the countryside. In other words: Don’t disturb – don’t destroy! In protected areas such as national parks and nature reserves there are special rules designed to protect valuable natural and cultural features. Some rules restrict the Right of Public Access, others expand it.
