Stone Age settlement at Hammervatnet
Trøndelag, NorwayAbout this experience
In the earliest Stone Age, about 11, 000 years ago, some of the first people in Norway settelsed here at Hammar lake on Freya. The last Ice Age came to an end, and new land rose from the sea as the heavy pressure of the ice disappeared.
The first people came and settled once the coast was free of ice, but large ice masses still pushed the country down. The amount of water from the melting ice was great, but not greater than the country slowly lifted himself and constantly new country was liberated. The sea was 35-40 meters higher than today.
We find the oldest settlements at this level.
