About this experience

Fånefjell - Bygland

Starting point is the southern entrance of the Fånefjell tunnel on highway 9.

From the parking you may follow the old road upwards, through the valley Kattedalen. From the top of the road there is a path leading to a picnic area with a nice view.

You may also continue on the road and descend on the northern side, but the old semi-tunnel around the mountain is closed due to the risk of rockslide, and walking through the main tunnel is dangerous for pedestrians. For these reasons you have to return the same way.

The mountain road is from around 1840, the semi-tunnel from 1923 and the main tunnel from 1963. Take your time and look around. The entire area is renowned for its rich flora.

Length: 3.5 km return trip
Ascent: 150 metres
Duration: 2-3 hours
Difficulty: Easy; road up through the hillside, followed by a path to the picnic area / viewpoint.
