Kapitelberget
Telemark, NorwayAbout this experience
The church at Kapitelberget was a crypt church. A crypt is a room beneath the chancel of a church; an underground vault containing the grave of a martyr or priceless relics. It was a private chapel, built by Dag Eilivsson in the 12th century.
It may also have been a place where masses were said for the dead. The church was situated on the highest point in the vicinity of Skien at the top of the range of hills to the east of the town centre. The ruins were discovered in 1783, but were not restored until the end of the 20th century.
