About this experience

The Lignite Mine in Vestfirðir is an interesting place to visit. It is located in the small village of Hnífsdalur in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The mine was in operation from 1871 until the late 1950s and is now a museum. The mine was used to extract lignite, a type of coal, which was used to power the local community.

Visitors to the mine can explore the old mining equipment, the tunnels and the buildings. There is also a small exhibition about the history of the mine and its workers.

The mine is open from June to August and guided tours are available. The mine is a great place to learn about the history of the area and the people who worked there. It is a unique experience and a great way to explore the Westfjords.
