About this experience

Humans have shaped the forests of Hämeenkangas for centuries with a heavy hand. Join our tour to hear the region’s unique story told in rich detail. Located in south-western Finland, Hämeenkangas is a series of eskers just over 20 kilometres long that is part of the Lauhanvuori-Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark. Humans have shaped the forests of Hämeenkangas for centuries with a heavy hand: not much more than a hundred years ago, some of the region’s forests had been completely destroyed and turned into desert. These areas have since been reclaimed by forests, both through human reforestation and natural regeneration. On the walking tour, our guide will explain the region’s geology, cultural history, forest use and ownership, and the ecology of dry and desolate heath forests. You may well be surprised by how unique and diverse the Hämeenkangas forests’ history can be.
