About this experience

Hanko, established 1874, has experienced many different periods during its short history.

Sea traffic during the winter, the great emigration, and spa-era during 1880-1930 are some periods in the past.

After the Winter War (1939-40) Finland surrendered Hankoniemi to the Soviet Union for use as a military base.

When the Continuation War started, the front line was in Lappohja.

In early December 1941, Hanko was recaptured and the evacuated residents returned to rebuild their war-battered town.

There are still many monuments in several places, also in the center of the town.

The walking tour starts in front of the Town Hall, we will see monuments of Soviet commander Kabanov and some monuments from Soviet time on the Puistovuori outside Casino-park.

Guided tour in Finnish or Swedish.
