The Grove in Kunoy
Norðoy, Faroe IslandsThe grove in Kunoy is a village trademark and a popular recreational area. Located in a valley above the village, the grove offers a breath-taking view of the village, the fjord and Kalsoy.
The grove has more than trees to offer. Beautiful flowers grow freely at the entrance, many benches dot the park and a large rock with a rope tied to its top is found at its centre – children often challenge each other to climb the rock.
Faroese nature is quite barren, naked. Although trees grew on the islands when the first settlers arrived, no trees grow naturally in the Faroe Islands today. In the late 1800s groves were planted in several places, the first one in Tórshavn, and shortly thereafter in a few more places, one of them being Kunoy.
