About this experience

The Illeris, Lodhøj, and Rotholmen Plantations are located in the beautiful countryside of northern Denmark. Located within the plantations are two marked trails that offer scenic views of the surrounding nature.

Illeris, Lodhøj and Rotholmen Plantations are a must-visit for nature lovers. The plantations offer a serene and peaceful environment for visitors to explore. There are two marked trails in the plantations, providing ample opportunities for hiking and cycling.

Cycling route no. 36, which is part of the national route no. 12, passes through the plantations, making it easily accessible for visitors. The diverse plant life in the area attracts a variety of bird species, adding to the charm and beauty of the plantations.

The plantations are also rich in history, as evidenced by the old road that winds through the area. This road used to connect Hvalpsund, Alstrup, and Gedsted and also served as a church road to Alstrup. In the past, it was also used to transport milk from local farms to the dairy in Hvalpsund.

As you explore the plantations, you will come across more than 16 burial mounds from the Bronze Age. These ancient structures give a fascinating glimpse into the lives of our ancestors. Although none of the burial mounds have been excavated by archaeologists, some have been disturbed by treasure hunters searching for hidden treasures.

Moreover, the burial mounds are surrounded by settlements and other archaeological traces, providing a deeper understanding of the area's history and heritage. The plantations also have toilet facilities by the parking lot for visitors' convenience.

For more information on the Illeris, Lodhøj, and Rotholmen Plantations and the surrounding area, do not hesitate to ask the friendly staff at the site. They will be more than happy to assist you in making the most of your visit. So come and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and rich history of the plantations today.
