About this experience

The Valberg tower (Valbergtårnet) was constructed from 1850 to 1853 and was the former observation tower of Stavanger. The architect was Chr. Grosch. The tower was the permanent lodging of the watchmen in Stavanger. Among their duties was to alert the people in town when there was a fire. The last guard was Tobias Sandstøl. He was a watchman in 18 years until the year 1922.

The famous childbookauthor Torbjørn Egner knew about this Tobias when he was writing his story about Kardemommeby (the town of cardamom). We are therefore quite sure that our "Tobias in the tower" is the "Tobias in the tower" in the book.

Valbergtårnet has al little watchmen's museum on the first floor which is interesting for schoolclasses and other people that are interested in the story. The tower is also for rent for big or small arrangements. On the second floor is space for up to 38 people. From all the tables you have a view over parts of the city.
